Tips for Flying with Little Ones

Tips for flying with babies
We know it can seem daunting to take a young child on their first flight.  We have learned a few things over the years taking our kids on airplanes from babies through teens!

You never know how a baby or toddler will act on any given day, but here are our top five tips for flying with littles.  These will help ensure the best possible flight with a young one.

#1:  Talk to them about what will happen
This may only work if your child is 18 months or older, but having a prior conversation all about the airport and airplane can help prepare them for what is coming.  Get your little one excited for the journey, but also talk through the steps they will take such as going through security, sitting in their seat for an extended time, etc.  Consider creating a storybook starring your kids experiencing all the upcoming events and places.  It is easier for them to understand in story-form and will reduce uncertainty when traveling since are familiar with the process/new places.

#2:  Bring special treats they may not normally get at home
If your child is old enough, gum is always a good choice to bring on an airplane since it helps with ear issues!  You can also consider snacks or drinks that are considered rare or special at home.  If you are flying with a baby, make sure you have their usual snacks/milk/formula on hand and easily accessible during the flight.

#3:  Make sure your family is seated together
When booking a flight, pay extra attention to the airline's policy for seating.  Some airlines will have assigned seating, and some will not.  If the airline offers assigned seating, make sure you are buying a fare that allows you to choose your seat in advance.  The most basic fares will not include an assigned seat.  Some airlines, like Southwest Airlines, have open seating and a Family Boarding process to keep parents and young children together.

#4:  Bring a few surprise toys and consider longer screen times
There may come a time in the flight where you want to reward good behavior - or need a trick up your sleeve to change the mood!  Consider bringing a few small surprise toys that your child would enjoy.  (We love hitting up a dollar store for these types of surprises!)  If you feel comfortable, waive your usual screen time limits.  Their favorite movie or tv show might be all they need to sit calmly for the duration of the flight.

#5:  Keep lovies/pacifiers handy to encourage napping
If your child naps with the same blanket and binky every day, keep those at hand for the flight!  Or perhaps it is a favorite plush toy or small pillow that soothes them, don't put that in a checked bag if you can avoid it.  These items may help them nap better and will provide an added feeling of security in an unfamiliar environment.

Our Best Bottom-Line Advice
Just do your best!  It probably won't all be perfect, but it will be ok.  And a magical family vacation will make it all worth it!
