Secrets Tides Punta Cana Review: An Honest Look at the Preferred Club Experience

Main Pool Area at Secrets Tides
By Alison, Founder & Travel Agent, Magic Expeditions

I just returned from a long weekend at Secrets Tides Punta Cana with a group celebrating a special anniversary, and I want to share exactly what we experienced so you know what to expect if this resort is on your radar.

As a travel agent who sends families and couples to Punta Cana all year long, I always jump at the chance to experience a property firsthand, and this stay gave me a lot to share, right down to the small details that only come from actually being there.

Getting There: The Airport Transfer

Picture
Secrets Tides Punta Cana sits in Uvero Alto, on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, about 45 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ).

We used a private transfer through Amstar, and the process could not have been smoother. A representative met us in the arrival hall right after baggage claim and took our bags from there. The van was waiting right outside, and the ride to the resort was smooth with minimal traffic.

If you are debating a private transfer versus a shared shuttle, this is exactly the kind of seamless experience that makes the extra cost worth it after a long travel day.

Arrival and Check-In

We arrived after 3pm and our room was already ready, which is not always a given at a resort check-in. The arrival experience itself set the tone for the whole trip: I was handed a cool towel with a wonderful scent as soon as we walked in, then treated to a 10-minute chair massage and glass of sparking wine while my husband handled the check-in paperwork. From there, our butler personally walked us to our room, showed us all of the room's features, and had our luggage delivered shortly after so we could get straight to relaxing.

We visited in September 2026, and it was hot, the kind of Caribbean heat where you need to reapply sunscreen more often than you think. I learned that the hard way after spending most of our first full day at the pool and beach and ending up with a bit of a sunburn, so plan accordingly.

Is Secrets Tides Punta Cana Adults Only?

Alison and Husband at Hibachi Dinner at Secrets Tides
Yes. Secrets Tides Punta Cana is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort, which makes it a great fit for couples, milestone celebrations, girlfriend getaways, and any group looking for a more relaxed, adult atmosphere.

Our group was there celebrating a 25th wedding anniversary, and the vibe throughout the resort matched that kind of trip perfectly.

Preferred Club Tropical Room: What to Expect

We stayed in a Preferred Club Tropical room with a garden view overlooking the resort's lush vegetation, and a balcony that included its own soaking tub. It is a small detail, but I loved that the balcony also had a rack specifically for drying swimsuits, which is the kind of thoughtful touch that made the room feel genuinely designed for guests who plan to spend most of their time in the water. The minibar was restocked daily throughout our stay.

The room itself was clean and well kept from the moment we walked in, with a comfortable bed and strong, reliable AC. We slept great every night: cool, dark, and completely quiet, with no pool or hallway noise making it into the room.

Because our group was celebrating an anniversary, the resort staff went above and beyond. They put up door banners for the celebration and arranged for all of our rooms to be close together, which made it so easy to coordinate as a group and share in the celebration together.

Butler Service: Meet Ray

Example of Ray's Text on Whatsapp
One of the best parts of the Preferred Club experience was our butler, Ray, who was fantastic from start to finish. He showed us around our room on arrival, arranged for our luggage to be picked up at the end of the trip, and shared his WhatsApp with us so he could send daily updates on resort activities throughout our stay.

With a group of 14, dinner reservations can get complicated fast, but Ray took care of securing hibachi reservations for our entire group, which let us just enjoy the evening together instead of worrying about logistics.

The moment that really showed how attentive Ray was: another couple in our group was at the beach and had not seen anyone come by to take drink orders. They messaged Ray directly, and he had someone sent over right away to take care of them. That kind of responsiveness, even when you are not right next to your butler, is what Preferred Club service is supposed to feel like.

This Is the Kind of Service We Book For Our Clients
Getting matched with a butler like Ray, having your rooms placed together as a group, and having those special touches waiting for you isn't luck. It's what happens when your trip is planned by someone who knows the resort and the process. And working with a Magic Expeditions travel agent costs you nothing more than booking it yourself.

Preferred Club Perks Beyond the Butler

We used the private Preferred Club lounge one evening to play games like Catch Phrase and cards as a group, which was a nice, low-key way to spend part of an evening together.

Otherwise, we stayed at the Preferred Club pool for the entire trip, which gave us easy access to the Preferred Beach, a food truck, a swim-up bar, and plenty of lounge chairs in the shade. Having that dedicated space, separate from the main pool, made the whole stay feel more relaxed.

Dining: A La Carte Restaurants and the Buffet

Dinner at Tierra
Reservations are not required at the a la carte restaurants at Secrets Tides (except for the hibachi table experience).

Our clear favorite restaurant was Tierra, the Amazonian-inspired restaurant. I had a chicken and rice dish there that was excellent, and the appetizers, especially the croquettes, were a highlight of the whole trip. The concept, presentation, and flavors stood out from the rest of the dining lineup, and it is the one spot I would tell every guest not to miss.

We also ate at the buffet, which had a lot of variety, but the food itself was just okay, more of a convenient option than a destination in its own right. If your time is limited, I would prioritize the a la carte restaurants over the buffet.

Preferred Club Guests get access to Oceania for a la carte breakfast and lunch.  If you are not Preferred Club, the buffet or room service will be your primary options.

Pools, Beach, and Activities

Both the Preferred Club pool and the main pool had their own swim-up bars, and at one point the resort brought out a floating bar that made its way through the pool, which was a fun surprise and a great way to spend an afternoon with the group. We did not book any excursions, watersports, or spa treatments on this trip, but there was plenty to do without ever leaving the resort.

September is considered a slower season, and it showed: the resort never felt crowded, which made the pool and beach experience feel even more relaxed.

I always want to be straightforward with my clients, so here is the honest note on the beach: we did see some sargassum during our visit, which is common in this region depending on the season. To their credit, the resort team was out cleaning it daily, so it never got out of hand and did not take away from our time on the sand.

Nightly Entertainment at Secrets Tides Punta Cana

Queen Cover Band at Secrets Tides
Nightly entertainment kept things lively without feeling repetitive. We caught a Queen cover band one night and karaoke on another, and both had great energy and drew a fun crowd. It is a nice mix of options depending on what kind of evening you are in the mood for.

However, if you are the type who wants to go to bed early and relax, I never felt the entertainment was too loud or prevented me from relaxing.

The Anniversary Surprise

One of my favorite moments of the trip was not something we planned ourselves. On one evening, the anniversary couple returned to their room to find rose petals scattered from the door all the way to the bed, arranged into a heart on top of the comforter. It was a simple, unprompted touch from the resort staff that ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the whole celebration.

When to Visit: Weather, Pricing, and Sargassum Season

If avoiding sargassum is your top priority, winter is generally the better time to visit.

We went in September, and while it is hot and can bring more seaweed to the beach, it also tends to come with better pricing, so it can be a good trade-off if budget matters more than a completely seaweed-free beach.

It is important to note that September is also in the middle of hurricane season.  Travel insurance is always recommended because you can never truly predict Mother Nature.

Is Preferred Club Worth It at Secrets Tides Punta Cana?

Based on our stay, absolutely. I would recommend the Preferred Club upgrade to anyone booking this resort, simply for the access it gives you to the Preferred pool, beach, bars, and butler service. It is not just a "nice to have" here, it genuinely shapes how relaxed and easy your whole stay feels.

One packing tip I will pass along from experience: do not forget the aloe. Between the heat and the time we spent at the pool and beach, it would have come in handy sooner rather than later.
