How to Travel With a Severe Food Allergy: Tips From a Travel Agent With Alpha-gal

How to Travel With a Severe Food Allergy

You can travel safely with a severe food allergy, including on a cruise, but it takes preparation.

Why Food Allergies Make Travel Stressful

Vacations are supposed to be carefree: time away with family and friends, destination weddings, girls' or guys' trips, and multigenerational adventures. But when someone in your travel party has a severe food allergy, it can add an entirely different level of stress before you even leave home.
I know this firsthand because I have a mammalian meat allergy called Alpha-gal syndrome. Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to a sugar molecule found in most mammals, and in the United States it is most often linked to the bite of a lone star tick. For me, it goes far beyond avoiding steak, burgers, bacon, and sausage. I also have to think about how my food is prepared.  Is my chicken or salmon cooked on the same grill as beef or pork? What oil are the French fries cooked in? Does the pasta sauce contain animal-derived ingredients or enzymes? Can my pizza be made with clean gloves and a clean cutter? Does that delicious-looking dessert contain pork gelatin? (You might be surprised how many do!)

These are questions most travelers never have to consider, but for someone with a serious food allergy, they can be part of every meal.

Can You Cruise With Alpha-gal Syndrome?

I have lived with my allergy for almost 15 years, and during that time I have traveled extensively and learned how important it is to speak up, ask questions, and advocate for myself. I have sailed with Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival while managing my allergy, and each experience has reinforced the importance of communicating your needs both before and during your trip.

My Experience on the Disney Destiny

In September 2026, I sailed aboard the Disney Destiny. I had noted my allergy prior to sailing, but once onboard, I continued to mention it anytime I ordered food, whether at the buffet, a quick-service location, or a sit-down restaurant.

Each time, a chef would speak with me directly about what I wanted and how it could be safely prepared. Sometimes that meant preparing something fresh or leaving off a sauce or seasoning. Other times, I was told that an item had already been prepared with an ingredient I couldn't have and couldn't be modified. Most importantly, I always had plenty to eat and felt comfortable with the information I was given.

I also noticed something I had never seen before in my travels. At the bottom of the Disney Destiny's menus was a symbol identifying dishes "made without animal meat, dairy, eggs and honey." The labeling continued at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney's private island destination on Eleuthera in The Bahamas. I spent the day in a cabana, so I ate at Mabrika Cove Cabanas Dining, where even the ice cream toppings were individually labeled as vegetarian or not. It serves the same offerings as True-True BBQ, the island's main buffet, so I would expect a similar experience there. These may seem like small details, but when you live with a serious food allergy, they provide tremendous reassurance. It certainly made me happy seeing all the things I could safely load onto my sundae.

I once worked with a mother whose daughter had a severe food allergy. At Chef Mickey's buffet at Walt Disney World, her daughter wanted shredded cheese that was sitting next to something she was severely allergic to, and her mother was concerned about possible cross-contact. When a chef realized what was happening, he brought the little girl the biggest bowl of cheese directly from the kitchen, away from the buffet. It was a simple gesture, but one that meant so much to that family.

How Do You Manage Food Allergies When Traveling Abroad?

In June 2026, I had clients traveling to Paris. One of the young women had a severe tree nut allergy, along with allergies to legumes and several other foods.

For each planned dining experience, I worked with my in-destination travel partner to communicate her allergies ahead of time. One evening, the group was attending a dinner theater. After learning about her allergies, the proprietor explained that because of the ingredients and close quarters, they did not feel comfortable guaranteeing that the dinner could be safely prepared. My clients were still able to enjoy the show and received a complimentary bottle of champagne, and we knew about the dining limitation before they arrived.

Even with food labeled, do not be afraid to ask questions.
A few days later, they had a dinner cruise planned on the Seine. The cruise company and chef provided us with the menu ahead of time. My client selected several items she could eat, and her allergy information and selections were sent to the onboard team before her trip. She was then able to enjoy a lovely dinner while cruising the Seine.

One company was honest enough to say, "We can't safely accommodate this," while another worked with us to find a solution. Both answers were valuable because my client knew what to expect before she arrived.

Preparation and communication are incredibly important when traveling with a food allergy.

Bring all essential medications with you and keep them easily accessible while traveling. Whenever possible, notify resorts, cruise lines, restaurants, tour operators, or other providers of your allergy before your trip.
(As your travel agent, I can help with this!)

Before you go:
  • Notify your resort, cruise line, restaurants, and tour operators of your allergy.
  • Pack all essential medications, including epinephrine auto-injectors, if prescribed, and keep them easily accessible while traveling.
  • Bring a copy of your allergy action plan.
  • For international trips, carry a chef card that explains your allergy in the local language.

Once you arrive:
  • Tell anyone involved in preparing or serving your food about your allergy, even if it was already noted ahead of time.
  • Be specific about things that may not be obvious. Ask about ingredients, preparation methods, shared cooking surfaces, oils, sauces, and anything else that could contain your allergen or cause cross-contact.
  • Never be afraid to ask another question. When it comes to a serious food allergy, there is no such thing as being too careful.

How Should You Prepare for Travel With a Food Allergy?

As a travel agent, I can never guarantee that a client with a food allergy won't encounter a challenge while traveling. What I can promise is that I will use my own experiences, resources, and contacts to help you prepare and make sure your allergy is communicated wherever possible before your trip begins.

I can reach out to travel partners ahead of time to ask questions, communicate specific allergies, and find out what accommodations may be available. Sometimes knowing what a restaurant or destination cannot safely accommodate is just as valuable, because it gives us an opportunity to consider other options ahead of time.

I am also fortunate to work with a wonderful team of experienced travel agents at Magic Expeditions. If you are visiting somewhere I haven't personally experienced, I have colleagues I can turn to for their firsthand knowledge and recommendations.

Having a severe food allergy myself has taught me that traveling isn't about being afraid to go. It's about being prepared, asking questions, speaking up, and having someone in your corner who understands why those details matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Disney Cruise Line accommodate food allergies?
In my experience, yes. I noted my Alpha-gal allergy before sailing on the Disney Destiny, then mentioned it every time I ordered food. At each location, a chef spoke with me directly about what could be safely prepared. I always had plenty to eat, though some items could not be modified.

Can you go on a cruise with Alpha-gal syndrome?
Yes. I have sailed with Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival while managing Alpha-gal syndrome. The key is noting your allergy before you sail and continuing to speak up at every meal once you are onboard.

What should I ask a restaurant about my food allergy?
Ask about ingredients, preparation methods, shared cooking surfaces, fryer oil, sauces, and anything else that could contain your allergen or cause cross-contact. Be specific about things that may not be obvious, like gelatin in desserts.

Can a travel agent guarantee allergy accommodations?
No travel agent can guarantee that you won't encounter a challenge. What a travel agent can do is communicate your allergy to resorts, cruise lines, restaurants, and tour operators before your trip and find out in advance what can and cannot be safely accommodated.
