Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It? What First-Timers Should Know Before Booking

Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It?

If you’re dreaming of a vacation that’s easy, fun, and completely stress-free, chances are you’ve considered an all-inclusive resort. For many travelers—especially families, honeymooners, and sun-seekers—it sounds ideal: one upfront price that includes your room, meals, drinks, and entertainment. But are all-inclusive resorts really worth it?

As travel planners who specialize in matching clients with the perfect vacation experience, we get this question all the time. So if you’re in the early stages of researching a tropical escape, here’s what you should know before you book an all-inclusive vacation.

What Is an All-Inclusive Resort, Really?

At its core, an all-inclusive resort bundles the cost of lodging, food, drinks (yes, usually alcohol too), and many activities into one price. The goal is convenience—no need to worry about budgeting for meals or pulling out your wallet every time your kid wants another frozen lemonade by the pool.

But here’s the catch: not all all-inclusives are created equal.

Some include premium dining, water sports, kids' clubs, airport transfers, and top-shelf drinks. Others offer a more bare-bones experience—and charge extra for everything from Wi-Fi to bottled water. That’s why choosing the right resort is key.

They can absolutely be worth it--if you value convenience, plan to spend most of your time at the resort, and pick the right fit for your group.

Here’s when they tend to be a great value:
  • You’re traveling with kids and want easy meals, entertainment, and zero surprises in your budget.
  • You’re celebrating something (like a honeymoon or anniversary) and want to relax without worrying about logistics.
  • You don’t want to overthink your vacation. The predictability and ease are major perks for busy people who just want to unplug.

When They Might Not Be Worth It

  • If you’re the type who wants to explore the local culture and restaurants every day.
  • If you’re on a tight budget and tempted by “too good to be true” deals (you may get what you pay for).
  • If you have a very restrictive diet or severe food allergies, you could face some additional challenges.

This is where a travel advisor makes a huge difference. We know which resorts consistently deliver quality, which ones have surprise fees, and which ones really cater to families, couples, or foodies. (Spoiler: it’s not always the ones with the biggest ad budgets.)

Tips for First-Time All-Inclusive Travelers

  1. Check the inclusion details. Read what’s actually included in your rate—some charge extra for room service, kids’ clubs, or specialty restaurants.
  2. Identify what matters to YOU. Are you a beach person or a pool person?  Do you want a quiet and peaceful experience or a lively party experience?  There are a lot of personal preferences to weigh when choosing an all-inclusive resort (and we can guide you).
  3. Family-friendly vs. adults-only. Know your vibe—these can be very different experiences.
  4. Travel insurance is a must. We always recommend it, especially for international trips.  If something unexpected happens while you are on vacation, you will wish you had coverage (from a hurricanes to medical issues!).
  5. Beware of timeshare presentations. Most resorts have a timeshare program or "vacation club" they will try to get you to buy into when you visit.  There are some resorts that do not do this, but many will have a sales force that will try to draw you in with additional freebies to get you to attend a presentation or tour.  These contracts are often with foreign companies and are legally binding - proceed with caution.
