Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise: A Firsthand Guide from a Family Who Just Sailed It
Heidelberg, Germany
We sailed the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise ourselves (July 16–23, 2026) aboard a chartered AmaWaterways ship, from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, through Switzerland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
This is our first-hand experience from a week on the water with our own kids, and everything below reflects what we actually experienced, good and imperfect.
If you're trying to decide whether this trip is right for your family, we can tell you what it's really like. As an Earmarked by Disney agency, we can also help you book it, choose the right cabin and add-ons, and avoid a few things we'd do differently next time.

What It's Really Like: An Honest Take
|
Adventures by Disney doesn't oversell this trip — if anything, the reality is better than the marketing. Six destinations, four countries, and an unhurried pace that never once felt rushed, even with two kids in tow.
A few things surprised us: The ship itself is remarkably smooth. We felt zero motion the entire week — genuinely no rocking, even overnight while cruising. If motion sickness has ever kept your family off a cruise before, this is a different experience entirely. The small moments are the best-planned ones. In Strasbourg, our Adventure Guides deliberately walked our group around a corner and held us there for a beat before letting us turn and see the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in full view for the first time. It's a small piece of choreography, but it's the kind of detail that tells you Disney thought about this trip in ways you wouldn't get if you tried to explore it on your own. Not everything goes exactly to script, and that's okay. Our motorcoach got genuinely stuck navigating the narrow streets near Rüdesheim (a moment our kids still bring up as their favorite "core memory" of the whole trip). Water levels on the Rhine meant one planned dock wasn't possible. Adventures by Disney handled both without missing a beat — which says more about the quality of the operation than a perfectly scripted week would have. The Adventure Guides make the trip. Ours were fantastic! They were genuinely warm, well-prepared, and clearly experienced (our Cruise Manager was a former Adventure Guide himself). A 6:45pm nightly briefing kept us oriented for the next day, and a daily pin tradition became something our kids looked forward to every evening. |
Highlights From Our Week
|
Basel, Switzerland → Embarkation
A short coach ride from our hotel to the ship, with the option to explore Basel first if you choose the later embarkation window. Open-seating dinner and a low-key welcome briefing set a relaxed tone from day one. Breisach, Germany and The Black Forest A scenic drive into the Black Forest for a toboggan ride, a tour through traditional German houses, and a hands-on wood whistle-making activity for the kids. Strasbourg, France Old Town charm, a stunning Gothic cathedral, and a boat tour along the canals. (Next time, we'd try the early-morning canoe option instead — we hear it's a highlight.) Mannheim / Heidelberg Castle, Germany A guided castle tour led by a guide in period costume, plus a self-guided lunch — Disney even provides cash for the meal — in an adorable town. Don't skip the ice cream spaghetti! Rüdesheim, Germany A gondola ride up to vineyard-covered hillsides, a visit to the Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet museum, and views of castles lining the Rhine. Cologne, Germany A walking tour through the old town, a visit to the cathedral, and (depending on your crew) a pub tour, perfume shop, or a chocolate museum stop. Amsterdam, the Netherlands A canal cruise, a visit to the Rijksmuseum, and an afternoon in Zaanse Schans for windmills, cheese tasting, and clog decorating. A farewell dinner onboard closes out the week before overnight docking and disembarkation. Exact excursions and included activities vary by sailing date — we can walk you through your specific itinerary before you book. |

What ship does Adventures by Disney use for the Rhine River Cruise?
Adventures by Disney charters a river ship operated by AmaWaterways, a leader in luxury river cruising, exclusively for Adventures by Disney guests.
Is the Rhine River Cruise a good fit for young children?
The minimum age Disney allows is 5 years old. I would recommend 9 years and up with all of the walking required. Junior Adventurer programming runs throughout the trip, with corresponding adult-only time built in as well.

Most days include a guided walking component in town, plus optional active excursions (biking, hiking, canoeing) depending on the sailing. It's a moderately active itinerary. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are a must.
Is there an adults-only version of this cruise?
Yes — Adventures by Disney also offers select adults-only sailings on the Rhine and other European rivers. We can help you compare itineraries and pick the right fit.
How much does the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise cost?
Pricing varies by cabin category, sailing date, and season. As an Earmarked by Disney agency, we monitor promotions and can walk you through current per-person pricing for your ideal dates.
Should I book the Rhine River Cruise through a travel agent, or directly?
Booking through Magic Expeditions costs nothing extra. Adventures by Disney pricing is the same whether you book direct or through our agency.
